JAFF (Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival) is a yearly Asian film festival based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, that concentrates on Asian cinema development. Established in 2005 by well-known director Garin Nugroho. JAFF objective is to promote the film industry and also to introduce Asian cinema to vaster audiences. JAFF will celebrate its 19th anniversary from 30 November to 7 December 2024 with the theme “Metanoia”. JAFF selecting the theme “Metanoia” because it depicts the continuous transformation of Asian cinema in its pursuit of excellence. Asian cinema’s “Metanoia” illuminates a hope for our survival, even a process of rebirth into a new and better form. This hope is expressed in the uniqueness of this year’s edition of JAFF.
JAFF held a press conference on November 8th, 2024, through an online meeting before the 19th Asian Film Festival events started. The press conference was about 90 minutes and was conducted properly from beginning to end. JAFF press conference on November 8th was attended by Ifa Isfansyah (JAFF Festival Director), Alexander Matius (JAFF Program Director), Linda Gozali (JAFF Market Director), Ministry of Culture representation, Gina S. Noer (Jury), filmmakers such as Mira Lesmana & Riri Riza, Meira Anastasia & Dipa Andika, Gita Fara, and finally Chicco Kurniawan (Actor).
JAFF Metanoia 2024 will be presenting 180 films from 25 Asia Pacific countries that will be aired in competition and non-competition programs. Films that compete in competition programs will be contesting for Golden and Silver Hanoman awards, Blencong awards, and JAFF Indonesian Screen Awards. In this year’s edition of JAFF, Cinema XXI will give full support for the events as a main venue to air multiple JAFF films. The exact location for JAFF 19th anniversary XXI theater will be in Empire XXI, Yogyakarta.
JAFF non-competition program will air selected best Asia Pacific movies. A total of 16 featured films from 11 countries and 22 short films from 14 countries will be screened in the Asian Perspectives program, four Indonesian feature films in the Indonesian Film Showcase program, and 10 Indonesian short films from new directors in the Emerging program. In a program called Panorama, that will screen a selection of films by renowned directors of Asian cinema, one of which include a documentary by Lee Seok-Jun titled RM: Right People, Wrong Place. The documentary is about Kim Nam-joon or professionally known as RM (Rap Monster), the leader of a K-Pop boy group called BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan) that recounts the creative process behind the production of his second solo album.
Documentary movie titled RM: Right People, Wrong Place, can be such a massive market success for JAFF Metanoia 2024. The reason for that is BTS has one of the biggest fandoms in all K-Pop world. BTS fans predictably are going to make tickets to be sold out quickly. Perhaps the ticketing website server is going to be crashed due to large amounts of BTS fans participating in JAFF ticket war, just to watch RM Right People, Wrong Place movie. So, if you are one of the participants that want to join JAFF’s Panorama program, you have to brace yourself to buy the ticket.
JAFF Metanoia 2024 will also include a program called “Nocturnal”. The program offers multiple horror and suspenseful thriller movies in a single theater that will be aired at midnight. This “Nocturnal” program can definitely be a good deal for horror movie mania and suspense thriller buffs out there. The reason for that is the timing, the program’s name, the theater atmosphere, and the movies that will be aired during the program. This year’s JAFF “Nocturnal” program will show horror and thriller movies such as, 404 Run Run by Pichaya Jarusboonpracha, Baby assassins: Nice days by Yugo Sakamoto, Chime by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, The Gesuidouz by Kenichi Ugana, and the classic Thailand Horror movie, Shutter by Masayuki Ochiai.
